Faced by the challenges of tightened budgets, constrained resources, and uncertain futures in many of our organizations, this year's participants could certainly relate to the pressures faced in difficult times, and how educators are often called upon to move mountains in the face of staggering challenges.
- Keynote speaker Beverley House showed attendees how they can make a bigger impact by trimming down to essentials in teaching in her presentation "The Case for Leaving Things Out.”
- Plenary speaker Charlene Pope delivered an eye-opening presentation on the educator's unique role in reducing and eliminating health disparities.
- Speaker John Furnell, also known as "Dr. J.," provided humor and entertainment throughout the conference and gave the closing presentation "Love The One You're With," which gave attendees a chance to reflect on work ethic, professionalism, and how it all ties in to passion for our work.
- Attendees were able to choose from a variety of breakout sessions and poster presentations each day of the conference that allowed them to gain new knowledge and skills to expand their practice as health care educators.
Throughout the conference, participants visited with exhibitors, whose generous support helped make the conference possible. All companies in the exhibitor showcase gave a five-minute presentation about their products or services during the vendor panel on Wednesday afternoon.
- Participants received tote bags, water bottles, and a dessert reception from conference sponsor Krames.
- Corporate member Trivantis was also on-site in support of the conference and HCEA membership.
- Corporate member Pritchett and Hull was in attendance to announce that this year's Health Care Education week will feature a special new twist: a contest that offers one lucky HCEA member a publishing contract.
In our Thursday luncheon, HCEA recognized both current and incoming board members. The Academy of Health Care Education inducted two new Fellows, Linda Kocent and Kathy Ordelt.
HCEA award winners included:
- Jean W. Raines Distinguished Service Award - Kim Hume, RN, MSN, St. Louis Children's Hospital
- Outstanding Research Award - Jamie Barker RN, BSN, CPON, CPN, Phoenix Children's Hospital
- Excellence in Practice Award - Patient and Community Education - The Artificial Airway Advisory Committee of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia - Linda S. Kocent, RN, MSN, Linda Bevington and Dee Huber
- Excellence in Practice Award - Staff Development - Sandy Cornett, RN, Ph.D. Director AHEC Clear Health Communication, Ohio State University College of Medicine
HCEA also recognized its new management company, the Rees Group, for the excellent management of the organization and conference this year. Rees Group representatives Susan Rees, Plumer Lovelace, Amanda Hulfachor, and Drew Nelesen were on-site throughout the conference, working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the entire event was a success.
The HCEA Board, as well as Special interest groups PIPE and FHERN held meetings to network and get work accomplished prior the conference. Social and networking opportunities for all participants included an optional trip to Asheville's largest tourist attraction, the Biltmore Estate, as well as dine-around outings on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
Evaluations from attendees reflect that this year's conference was a huge success on all fronts, and gave participants plenty of muscle to go back to work and move mountains in health care education!
